Milestone 2 – three strong concepts

After talking to the client my initial thought is be as creative as possible as she doesn’t know what outcomes she wants. However the most obvious need would be a printed booklet that showcases the benefits in writing and images for the NHS staff and stakeholders. This would not be fun or creative to achieve so I adapted the idea to be on a tablet or phone (covid safe). This can mean the booklet can play music, show videos, or links to existing organisations.

With the nudge workshop, I thought of creating a short and snappy symbol and message that leads to curiosity. Thus the pill of art. This can be easily placed around the hospital with little funding and pins can be worn by staff showing engagement. The social media can hold the information as it is free and already available to use – this is where the science can come in.

This idea is to push the boat on what the client can expect. This is to physically engage people whether being on a board in a hospital room or in a meeting with stakeholders. I need to think more how this idea can be brought to life.

Research

Who is the client?

My client is apart of the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (UHB) and the council for arts. Her goal is to bring the health board to see the benefits of art and the community of opportunities it brings. There are funding schemes available for the client to use but they are hard to get so what is produced needs to be well thought out and ready to be sent for acceptance.

Who is the target audience?

We have debated this in the group and although the outcomes will be for anyone within an NHS building the presentation will be for the health board members so I need to keep the work highly professional and factual. To narrow this down further I have decided to mainly target the health care professionals over the patients as the care starts with them

“NHS staff off sick costs the £2.4 billion, with 10 million days taken off in one year. The NHS pay £1 in every £40 on sick leave, including stress, anxiety and depression.” – Creative Health Inquiry Report 2017

What is the Science behind the brief?

A study of 50,000 people found that regardless of skill level, taking part in activities like painting, pottery or music helps people manage their emotions, build confidence and explore solutions to problems.

Repetitive creative motions are easy to master and lets the mind become completely absorbed, reducing anxiety, boosting your mood and even can slow a heart beat. When a creative motion is successful it releases dopamine, a feel-good chemical that helps motivate a person.

An average person has 60,000 thoughts per day and 95% of them are exactly the same, day in and day out; By immersing yourself in a creative activity changes these thoughts and a mind can engross themselves in the activity where  they temporarily forget their troubles and worries.

Milestone 1 – Creative Brief

The brief is telling us to show the staff how beneficial art is on health and wellbeing. When speaking to the client I learnt that she had to be approved by the board, therefore we have to produce something for the board that can be useful for the staff and create a campaign that highlights the benefits and shows how the health board can achieve this.

Looking into the NHS wales they have some great messages about wellbeing and have already started their journey into the arts but funding is low and engagement is maxed due to the lack of funding to this enterprise. The client explained in last years report that a jazz band went into the elderly patient word at one local hospital and it was so successful with patients and staff they planed to go again. This shows that music can lift spirits and bring a community together.

I designed my creative brief with the colours of the NHS Wales logo with each paragraph as arrows into the future to shine a positive light on how with this brief will be positive and fun, yet structured to please the health board.

Talking to the mentor and tutors, I plan to create a video or interactive book instead of a basic powerpoint that the client wants. By creating this the staff and patients can download while waiting at the GP or laying in bed in the hospital to engage with the arts, including music drawing and other such things.

The client has already hired artists to create murals around hospitals but I believe an interactive mural might be better as it could change/ grow through the years. This allows the hospital to take it as their own not just an artist from outside creating one mural that staff could become numb to if they see it everyday.

Nudge and Budge workshop

We already understand that graphic communication uses signals and meaning that influence the viewer. This workshop is to introduce and understand the relationship between these expressions and the real effects that the designs have and their consequential actions. I learnt the 6 styles that interlink explaining the behavioural insights and psychological nudge that factor in the consequential responsibility we as designers have.

The 6 systems are as follows;

  1. Systems thinking > Fast and Slow – Fast being unconscious, effortless – Slow being rationals and responsive
  2. Information design > Visual Language – Either textual or imagery, tonal etc.
  3. Information actions > Cues & Reminders – Triggers of emotions to lead to an action/ responce
  4. Information actions > Planning – to make simple actions, reducing procrastination
  5. Framing > Loses and Gains – Social Comparison – Choice and Incentive – Gains and Loses
  6. MINDSPACE

This was beneficial as I am using this thought process within my dissertation to explain the ethics of a single designer when influencing the masses; and how the gain/ hold power over a viewer. Is it ethical to influence a person that would not understand that they are being influenced?

Thinking about information

This made me think of posters and social media campaign designs but I wish to think more than just the basics and push myself for a good portfolio.

Design for real life/ science; week 1

week 1 – Getting stuck in!

After 7 months of being away from the uni life, I need get stuck in. With a starting motivational speech from the lectures, I learnt we have live clients to work with.

The aim is to notice gaps and opportunities in out brief and communicate issues/ strategies in a responsible manor. Luckily, we have mentor in the real world to help us through.

Arts for Health & Wellbeing

Working for Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (UHB) the goal is to raise awareness of the benefits of arts and creativity for health and well-being. I aim to further the knowledge in health care professionals so that creativity becomes a core value in the health board.

To do this I need accurate information that is clearly presented for the client (board) and the target audience of health care professionals. First I will compile facts and figures that are from trust worthy sources.

Asking for feedback I realised the images were all over the place and needed the most work. However I was still not certain on the front cover and gallery page.

I updated the cover image to more look like an English garden with a banner image. Next I decided the gallery pages needed the images to be the main focus and pushed for the banner feel. Changing it to green and removing the pink overlays means that it links to the work pages and cover image. I updated the images to add curiosity and they better represent the projects within.

The back was a simple change to link to the first page with the logo.

With the feedback I cut back and looked at what the images meant. I took out the images that weren’t the best. I focused onto the main point of the project. I removed the captions for if an image cant be self explained what is the point in it being there. I spread out my images so they can breath so I have given them more pages with each page having a clear set out purpose.

I am happy with this outcome and feel I have refined my portfolio throughout my pages.

First I wrote out the brief and solutions of each project that was a requirement then added the ones I want to show off. This gave me a platform to build and to select images from.

Being constant, I used the CV stying at first to be developed on later which sets the tone and gives my styling first.

I needed a navigation so I kept it simple and added a sheen over the top of the images to make them look more cohesive.

I kept the ending contact page simple and to the point in the same stylings as before.

I decided I needed a constant through out my designs so took the bar/ column idea forward. Within this there is hierarchy and space to breath which I have struggled to manage in the past. All images are labelled and have equal spacing.

The best way for me to explain what I have done is for you to experience it for yourself.

Watching the tutors tutorials helped a lot as I had no idea where to start or how to.

I struggled most with the main banner (left column on a desktop). I knew I wanted my logo at the top and then I added my name in different fonts. Experimenting with this my name in the design took away the simplicity of it. Taking it away looked neater and better; however I still needed my name somewhere and getting feedback they said it was needed.

I made sure there were several links to my instagram. I embedded some within a project as the project is on my instagram. I added my favourite insta images to both the contact page and about me page.

Using my logo, I created a basic template. This includes all that is necessary and is very straight forward.

Discussing this with my tutor, he immediately said you want the words to speak – don’t let the image get in the way. I needed to experiment with the image for the best result. Also looking into the paragraphs he said I need to add onto who I am as a person.
