Sunday 17th February through to Tuesday 19th February – Free Time
I was a mixture of emotions but overall excited to see/ meet graphic designers within their own fields. After a nervous journey on the train and London underground, I met everyone in London and timed it perfectly meeting everyone as they walked into the hostel.
Once all of us in my room were settled in we decided to take a trip and walk around to see the local sights. One area the was a short underground trip away was china town. This was full of different sights and had a mass collection of different smells. When wondering through we realised it was very close to a Harry Potter exhibition. This was full of creative ideas and fun little designs. A part that I found fascinating was the way that the letters were placed all around the house. They were printed on the floor, on the walls and ceiling as well as the well known scene of the letters forcing their way out of the fire place.
After a generous helping at Nandos we walked back. As I lead the way I wanted to go through as many as the parks as possible to see the contrast of the urban city verses the free flowing style of nature. The inspiring part was with the bright city lights shining on the bark of a old trees as this seems unnatural yet works so cohesively and calmly.
On the Tuesday we had more free time so felt it was a good time to go to some museums. The main one that everyone wanted to go to was the Tate Modern. This included a wide variety of art, such as; oil painting, wax works, carpentry, masonry, fabric styles, print, animations and short films. This made me think of the ways that I can present and use texture within my work.
When looking around the gift shop I noticed a section of graphic design books. This included font styles, layout and art work by graphic designers. One book that caught my eye was one with layouts and styles with grid systems as that is what a lot of the current work is on.
